Sketch your composition in your sketchbook. Since the bird is so dark, make sure to draw out the feather structure—especially on the tail because it is a dominant feature in this particular species of bird. Make note of the bird’s very pointy, almost hooked bill. These types of details are essential to identify and carry over into your drawing. They can be attained simply by doing some research about the particular animal you are drawing.

Once you have your composition worked out, create a contour drawing and transfer it to your final drawing surface.
